Step 1: Take Room by Room Temperature Readings

Start with a basic thermometer or the temperature sensor on your phone. Check the temperature in each room at the same time, ideally in the late afternoon when cooling demand is highest. Hold the thermometer about waist height, away from direct sunlight, supply vents, and exterior doors, and let it settle for a few minutes before reading it.

A 2 to 4 degree difference between rooms is common in most homes. A gap of 5 degrees or more, especially between rooms on the same floor, usually points to a real airflow or system issue rather than normal variation.

Step 2: Feel the Airflow at Each Supply Vent

Walk to each supply vent in the home and hold your hand a few inches away. You are checking for two things: whether air is coming out at all, and how strong that airflow feels compared to other vents in the house.

Weak or barely noticeable airflow at a vent, especially compared to vents elsewhere in the home, often points to duct problems such as leaks, disconnected sections, or restrictions somewhere between the system and that room.

Step 3: Check for Closed or Blocked Vents

Look at both supply and return vents in the rooms that run warm. Furniture, rugs, curtains, and boxes placed in front of a vent can quietly cut off airflow without anyone noticing. Confirm that vent dampers are fully open, not just the visible grille.

If a vent has been closed or blocked for a while, opening it back up is one of the simplest fixes for uneven cooling, and it costs nothing to check.

Step 4: Compare the Thermostat Reading to Actual Room Temperatures

Check what your thermostat displays, then compare it to the reading you took in the room where the thermostat is installed. A room that runs warm consistently, morning and night, regardless of sunlight, points more toward an airflow, ductwork, or system performance problem.

Step 6: Check the Air Filter

Pull the air filter and hold it up to a light. If little to no light passes through, it is restricting airflow across the entire system, not just one room. A dirty filter can make an existing uneven cooling problem worse and should be ruled out before any other diagnosis.

These checks can point you in the right direction, but they cannot measure everything. Confirming duct leakage, refrigerant charge, and true airflow volume requires tools most homeowners do not have on hand, including manometers, refrigerant gauges, and airflow meters.
